Business Sri Lanka Security Advisory Elevated Risk of terrorist attacks |
Business Sri Lanka receives many enquiries regarding travel to Sri Lanka and whether it is 'safe'. Given the security concerns that exist in many countries, including the UK, Sri Lanka is generally no different.
As reported in the media, there have been a number of security incidents over the past year, some of which have been in and around Colombo.
Since the much reported use of small aircraft by the LTTE last year, the Sri Lankan Government has announced an improved 3D radar system that will now detect such aircraft. There have been no recent aerial attacks. The LTTE continues to use suicide bombers and roadside bombs (usually targeting civilian buses and military vehicles).
Overseas business visitors, tourists and tourist resorts are not specific targets in Sri Lanka. However there is currently an increased risk of attacks so we advise vigilence when travelling. We advise against using public transport. This includes public bus services and trains. Business Sri Lanka is of the opinion that travel to Sri Lanka for Business and non-business can still be undertaken. Despite the increased threat level, you will be reassured by the high levels of security throughout Colombo and the surrounding areas including the airport.
It is advisable not to travel to the North of the country.
